The Vice Minister of Indonesian Home Affairs, John Wempi Wetipo says that the Low Carbon Development in Papua is expected to be able give a significant impact on Papuans. Moreover, the carbon emission trading is also expected to improve the economy in Papua.
“Atleast the carbon emission trading could give a positive impact to the people there. In truth, that is what we expected, so don’t say ‘oh this is a protected forest, oh this is that area, this area’ but people cannot felt its impact,” says Wempi when attending an interactive dialogue themed “Encouraging the Institutionalization of Sustainable Development in Papua” at Wyndham Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (28/2).
The dialogue which was presented by Partnership for Governance Reform (KEMITRAAN) NGO was aimed to give an alternative solution on bottleneck of continuous development regulations through Low Carbon Development scheme in Papua.
Wempi stressed that the collaboration between Home Affairs Ministry and KEMITRAAN regarding Low Carbon Development could accelerate the realization of big vision in bringing prosperity to Papua. This is part of their effort in realizing government goal of improving the economy in Papua.
“We can build it, and we have to be fast. So in our early development, KEMITRAAN will work together with the government, both regional and center, or any other Ministry and Institutions to monitor the process,” he said.
He continued that with the New Autonomous Region in Papua, government have a lot of opportunity in infrastructure development. Despite that, massive development in Papua need to be monitored so as not to give any negative impact on natural environment.
“We are talking about the future so there will be an impact for the people, not just protecting the natural environment, but also giving them an insurance for its next generations,” he continued.
