The Regional Secretary of Papua Province Ridwan Rumasukun and the Regent of Lanny Jaya Petrus Wakerkwa, went directly to inspect the damage caused by the hail that happened in several locations of Kuyawage District. Several efforts in overcoming the disaster, involving joint team from Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) as well as the Social Service and Health Office of Lanny Jaya Regency, was deployed to the locations.

Petrus Wakerkwa explained that the hail is one of the natural phenomenon that occurs once in 15 or 6 years. After the government detects that there will be hail a month prior from happening, the regional government have done various initial measures on it. One of which is by distributing logistics to the people of Kuyawage, West Wano, and Goa Balim District.

After receiving the reports of the hail that happened in Kuyawage on Monday (7/18), the government of Lanny Jaya immediately formed a special team to act upon it. The team then deployed to the location affected by the hail.

“On Tuesday, July 21st, 2022, the government of Lanny Jaya have send their teams to provide aids, such as rice and other food supplies, to the affected regions,” wrote Wakerkwa in Letter Number 131/302/BUP/2022 regarding Reports of Natural Disasters.

The regional government of Lanny Jaya announced an emergency situation for Frosting and Hail on Kuyawage District from July 25th to October 25th, 2022.

Other than regional government, the Ministry of Social also provided their help. The team from Lanny Jaya and the Ministry worked hand-in-hand to provide supports for the affected people.

Then, on Augusts 4th, 2022, the government of Lanny Jaya sends their medical team to the locations. The team of 11 people consists of one doctor and ten medical workers. They also build a Emergency Response Command Post in Tiom Airport under the supervision of Wakerkwa.

“On August 8th, 2022, the government of Lanny Jaya will send their aid of 10 tons of rice and other food supplies to the affected region,” wrote Wakerkwa.

The natural disaster have cause hundreds of people lost their source of food. Their condition is also got affected due to consuming foods that had being contained by dangerous substance

According to data, the disaster have affected 548 families, or approximately 2,740 people. The disaster also caused four people died and 61 other having a diarrhea. However, according to further investigations, one of the four people who died was due to a congenital disease.

“It makes the number of people who died are three,” he said.

However when the government and the ministry arrived to inspect the location, they got an information from the medical team that there was a lady who was having a problem in her labor. The team immediately evacuates her to the Wamena Hospital by air. Sadly, she didn’t survived the labor.

“Therefore, the number of people who died until today, (Sunday, August 7th) are four,” wrote Wakerkwa.
