Vice Minister of Home Affairs Ribka Haluk emphasized that the special autonomy policy for Papua is the government’s effort to realize justice, welfare, and recognition of the uniqueness of the Papuan people’s culture. She conveyed this at the 23rd Commemoration of Papua’s Special Autonomy Day at the Papua Mountains Governor’s Office Yard, Jayawijaya Regency on Tuesday (11/19/2024).
The event became an important momentum to reflect on the journey of Papua’s Special Autonomy for more than two decades. Ribka Haluk expressed her appreciation to the local government, traditional and religious leaders, and the entire Papua Mountains community who continue to support the implementation of the Special Autonomy policy.
She explained that the special autonomy policy is an effort to provide broader authority to the government and the people of Papua to regulate and manage themselves within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). This authority includes the fields of government, defense and security, monetary and fiscal, religion, justice, and other authorities in accordance with laws and regulations.
On the other hand, he explained that the government has expanded the Papua region from two provinces to six provinces. This policy is expected to support the implementation of regional government in Papua.
“And accelerate the welfare of the community and to guarantee and provide space for indigenous Papuans in political, governmental, economic and socio-cultural activities,” concluded Ribka.
