Around 500 families are forced to evacuate after Jayapura hit by an earthquake with the strength of 5,2 back on Thursday (2/9).
They are evacuating to several evacuation locations such as CV Thomas, Entrop, BTN Bank, Rajak Christian Church, Bhayangkara I, Navy Complex, and B-One.
Head of Papua Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Willem Manderi, on Thursday night says his party will prepare evacuation tents and prepare other needs for the evacuees.
Willem adds that BPBD Papua is also listing the area affected by the earthquake.
“Hopefully the damage study team have already arrived in the field to see what kind of impact the earthquake gave was so that we can estimate the losses,” Willem said as quoted by Tribunnews.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Ministry of Social have also build their emergency tents in several locations.
“Other than tents, we also prepared instant foods. That’s what we do,” says Ministry of Social Expert, Benhur Tomi Mano.
The earthquake that rocked Jayapura City on Thursday have killed four civilians. Jayapura City Police Chief, Grand Commissioner Victor Mackbon says the victims were in a cafe that got destroyed and washed to the sea.
“The incident happend in one of the cafe in Permai Shophouse where it got destroyed and washed to the sea,” said Victor, Thursday.
Meanwhile, Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded there are 1,079 earthquakes in Jayapura City since January 2nd to February 9th.
Head of Dwikorta BMKG Karnawati says from the thousands of earthquake, 132 were felt by people in Jayapura.
The Thursday’s earthquake was happened in land with the depth of 10 km. Dwikorta says this kind of earthquake is a shallow earthquake due to active cesarean activity.
“By looking at the epicenter and the depth of its hypocenter, this earthquake is a shallow earthquake due to active cesarean activity,” says Dwikorta in official written statement.
