Yahukimo regent Didimus Yahuli announced that schools would be closed temporarily due to increase in violance activities in the area, Thursday (3/16).

“It is true that schools, starting from Wednesday (3/15) to Saturday (3/18), would be closed temporarily due to increase of violance in Dekai. If the situation have returned to normal, then on Monday (3/20), students could return to school,” says Didimus to Antara news office at Jayapura on Wednesday.

He admits that the step was taken due to increase in security disturbances in Yahukimo, particularly in Dekai in these last few days.

It was reported that there was an elementary school that got burned down, and to avoid any worse situation from happening, the government decided to close the school temporarily and told the students to stay at home.

Didimus Yahuli says that the incident that burned the school, YPK Metanoia Elementary School, was happened on Sunday, late at night. Reportedly, the perpetrator that burned the school also shot a commercial plane that flew by.

“This is unacceptable, becasue nowhere in the world it is acceptable to shot a commercial plane, which carries civilians. Imagine if those civilians are your families,” says Didimus Yahuli.

When asked about the security situations in Dekai, Didimus says its getting better, with the security forces in the area remains vigilant.

“The community are expected to join in defending in security efforts so that conditions in Dekai could return to normal, and people can return to their daily lives,” says Didimus.
